Zavrč
In the Municipality of Zavrč, the wine-growing Haloze Hills reach their northernmost point, embraced by the Drava River flowing from Ptuj and Markovci. In the past, the Drava River greatly influenced the development of the settlement, and even the origin of the Church of St. Mary is said to be connected to a shipwreck of rafters and their fortunate escape from the rushing river in Zavrč.
Thanks to its unspoiled nature, natural beauty, and cultural landmarks, visitors gladly return to the area. In addition to all the beauty bestowed by nature, the municipality is also home to many attractions and landmarks created by human hands throughout history. One of the most beautiful cultural monuments is the Zavrč Manor, situated on a hill and built by the Counts of Sauri, former owners of Borl Castle.
Viticulture has the longest tradition in this part of the Haloze region, alongside which numerous hospitality, trade, and small craft activities have developed. The Municipality of Zavrč is home to traditional wine-growing locations such as Turški vrh, Drenovec, and Goričak.
The small Municipality of Zavrč hides many surprises worth discovering. According to legend, on their return from Vienna, the Turks buried a Turkish grandmother together with a great treasure at Turški vrh.

Flora and Fauna of Zavrč–Haloze
No matter which path through the Haloze Hills you choose, it will lead you through forests, past vineyards, meadows, pastures, and orchards, which are often home to important habitat plant species. During a relaxing walk in nature, you can enjoy many magical views, and if you take your time, you may also notice the abundance of wildlife around you.
From beautiful butterflies and small forest inhabitants to larger animal species, the area is full of life. The Haloze region is recognised as an ecologically important area due to its diverse population of rare plant and animal species. In many other places, these species are endangered because of the rapid transformation of the traditional cultural landscape into intensively used land.

Church of St. Nicholas
The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas (sveti Miklavž), who was regarded as the patron saint of rafters and boatmen, as busy river traffic passed through the area in past centuries. The Drava River served as an important rafting route for transporting timber from Pohorje further downstream towards the Danube.
The church is a cultural and historical monument, richly decorated with paintings and statues. Above the manor and the Church of St. Nicholas, at an attractive location, stands the filial church of the Virgin Mary.
Zavrč Manor
One of the most beautiful cultural landmarks is the manor situated on a hill above the settlement. Throughout history, Zavrč Manor changed several owners, with the Ulm family being the last owners. In the past, the manor served as the political and judicial centre of the area, while today it is the seat of the Municipality of Zavrč.
