NEW | Accessibility of the Drava cycle route

Peter Pala from Hungary, who cycled from Toblach (I) to Legrad (HR) last week, shared his experiences regarding the accessibility of the Drava cycling route - Drava Bike. He traveled the entire route on a trekking bike. In the following, we share his experiences with you in individual stages.

Due to the heavy rains that swept over Slovenia, many watercourses rose extremely quickly and flooded a considerable part of Slovenia. Many places are inaccessible, road and public transport is obstructed. The weather conditions are slowly calming down, but we still urge you to act prudently and responsibly.The natural disaster did not spare even the Drava cycling route. We have collected key information for you about the accessibility of the Drava cycling route - Drava Bike.

Construction

Complete closure due to the reconstruction of the bridge in Ruše.

In 2021, the Directorate of Infrastructure of the Republic of Slovenia started the reconstruction of the bridge over the Drava River between Selnica ob Drava and Ruše. During the works, the bridge will be completely closed, from May 31, 2021 to the fall of 2022. During the complete closure, pedestrians and cyclists will not be able to cross the bridge. For cyclists on the Drava cycle route, a detour is planned from the Castle of Fala along the Ruše–Puščava regional road to Ruše.

Reviving the tradition of panning for gold along the Drava Cycling Route

The Slovenian part of the Drava Cycling Route is an increasingly attractive destination for both domestic and foreign cyclists. Under the slogan "An Experience Around Every Turn," it hides many adventures along and on the river Drava, from rafting, rowing, and swimming, to enjoying a variety of culinary delicacies, to learning about the cultural pulse of riverside towns. In the future, existing experiences under the brand Drava Bike will be joined by a new one, gold panning, which is being developed in the Municipality of Starše as part of the ZLATA DRAVA (Golden Drava) project.

Novelties on the Drava Cycling Route

Cyclists from Slovenia and abroad have been able to cycle along the Drava Cycling Route for some time now, which is already fully marked; in recent years, many construction works have been carried out to complete the cycle route as quickly as possible.

Arrangement of signalization before the start of the cycling season

In order to ensure the best possible arrangement of signalization on the Drava Cycling Route, the Slovenian Infrastructure Agency (DRSI), before the start of the cycling season, installed supplementary signs on the Maribor - Ptuj route and repaired all orientation signboards damaged during the winter.

We would like to point out that immediately after the Slovenian border, when the Drava Cycling Route leads towards beautiful sand dunes, the route is very rough and filled with gravel.
