Exhibition zDRAVO

The area of the Drava lowland between Selnica ob Drava and the state border at Središč ob Drava is one of the most important nature conservation areas in Slovenia due to its exceptional biodiversity and is also defined as a Natura 2000 Drava area. It encompasses the river Drava and its flood zone, where the flood forest and the characteristic cultural landscape of the flood world are partially preserved, but it is increasingly being encroached upon by intensive agricultural use and settlement. The area is extremely complex both in terms of nature conservation content and in terms of numerous activities or unwanted impacts on the state of nature. The key factor that enables the development and preservation of diverse living environments and thus the high biotic diversity of the area is the hydrological regime of the river. Due to the hydropower exploitation of the Drava, the water regime has been changed, which is also reflected in the deterioration of living environments and the many species that inhabit these environments. Their preservation therefore depends today on active action and adequate maintenance, which reduces the consequences of changes in the hydrological regime on former natural processes and the consequences of inappropriate activities and interventions in the flood zone.

The zDRAVO exhibition at Borl Castle emphasizes that the Drava River is extremely important for people's lives, with its dynamics and processes it shapes their lives and creates diverse living environments with a great variety of plant and animal species.

That is why we present the river and life along it in five sections: The river is flowing water, The shaping river, When the river flow calms down, The river crosses the banks and The river is also under our feet. Inside each of them, we shed light on river processes, present plant and animal species and their habitats, then show what the river has to offer, remind that the river is under threat and invite us to take action together!

We are accompanied throughout the exhibition by Zlatko Šoder, a Drava pebble maker, lover of nature and the Drava River and everything related to it. He is interested in the power of the river, which transforms the environment, the world that lives next to it, and the relationship between people and the river. So he spends all his free time exploring the Drava River. We invite you to explore the Drava, too, in the Borl Castle exhibition space and at the interpretation points along the Drava River.
