Natura 2000 sites and landscape parks

Nature and man have become inextricably linked over the millennia of living together.

The Natura 2000 network consists of over 27,000 sites, with 354 sites in Slovenia and 8 along the Drava.

Lake Dravograjsko jezero

Lake Dravograjsko jezero (also known as Črneško jezero) is a damming reservoir of the HPP Dravograd. In addition to the left natural bend, the dam further slowed down the river, which deposited more sediment and turned into almost stagnant inland water, hence the name Lake Dravograd. The laked area was gradually transformed into a swamp with islands and reeds, which has all the characteristics of a delicate and rich wetland ecosystem. This is a valuable habitat for common, as well as rare and special plants and animals. It is here that many waterfowl find shelter and breeding ground. Over 150 species are known. These are permanent birds that nest and hibernate here, but there are also many migratory birds that nest here, and in winter they move to warmer places.

Maribor Lake Nature Park and a unique island on the Drava River

Maribor or Bresternica Lake above the Maribor Island was created by damming the Drava River due to the Mariborski otok hydroelectric power plant. Today it is protected as a landscape park. The lake is a very popular place for recreation for the people of Maribor and other visitors. Along the shore of the lake there are many opportunities for leisure activities: the lake gives the opportunity to paddle, surf, sail, swim in the pool or go for a walk, bike ride or run.

Lake Ptuj

Slovenia's largest artificial lake on the Drava River impresses with its grandeur. The lake belongs to Natura 2000, as many birds nest there. Among them, the common tern and the river gull. On the right bank of Lake Ptuj there is a bird observatory, which allows us to observe a wide range of bird species in this area. Artificial nesting islands are built on the lake for the common tern, river gull and black-headed gull. A 12 km long trail runs around the lake and an ornithological observatory has been set up with all the most important information about birds.
